Hyundai Sonata Overview
The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-sized car produced by South Korean automaker, Hyundai. The first iteration of the Sonata was released in 1985 as a replacement for the Hyundai Stellar, but due to poor reception, it was withdrawn from the market. In 1988, the second-generation Sonata was launched and received positive feedback, both domestically and internationally in Canada, North America, and Europe, with a Mitsubishi engine.
The third-generation Sonata was introduced in 1993 and was available in two engine options, sold as the Sonata in South Korea and as the Marcia globally with slight modifications to the exterior. In 1996, it underwent a facelift with changes to the front and rear design and the engine.
The fourth-generation Hyundai Sonata was released in 1998 and featured a larger size but the same wheelbase, built on the Hyundai-Kia Y4 platform. In 2001, it received a mid-cycle refresh with updates to the hood, grille, headlights, tail lights, and rear license plate placement.
The fifth-generation Sonata was launched in Korea in 2004, and in 2005 in the US, with standard safety features. In 2008, it received a facelift with redesigned engines, a new front fascia, a chrome 3-bar grille, taillights, jewel-projector headlights, 10-spoke alloy wheels, and a revised Instrument Panel.
The sixth-generation Sonata was produced from 2009 to 2014 and underwent a facelift in 2012 with upgrades to the interior and exterior. In 2014, the seventh-generation Sonata was launched, receiving a radical redesign in 2017, dubbed the "Sonata New Rise" in South Korea, and also featuring a Plug-in Hybrid variant.
The eighth-generation Sonata was released in 2019 and boasts a sporty design and advanced features. In Pakistan, it is available in two variations, the Hyundai Sonata 2.0 and Hyundai Sonata 2.5.
Hyundai Sonata Exterior
The 2024 Hyundai Sonata 8th generation boasts a sleek and futuristic design, referred to as "Sensuous Sportiness" by the automaker. The fastback-like shape is accented by a narrow grille at the front and LED projection headlamps that extend along the hood. The front of the car also includes LED daytime running lights and front parking sensors.
The rear of the car features a modern touch with C-shaped horizontal LED tail lights that run along the width of the car. It is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, retractable side mirrors with LED turn signals, and a panoramic sunroof, along with a shark fin antenna.
Hyundai Sonata Interior
The Hyundai Sonata 2024 boasts a luxurious interior with a two-toned camel-colored leather finish. The front seats offer adjustable headrests and lumbar support, with the driver's seat being power-adjustable for optimal comfort. The rear seats are equipped with adjustable headrests, armrests with cup holders, and a 60/40 split function for increased trunk space. The rear also features a USB charging port and leather-foamed seat corners.
The 4-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel is electronically powered and has tilt and telescope adjustments, including controls for audio, MID, voice control, and cruise control. The car features a 12.3-inch high-resolution TFT LCD screen behind the steering wheel for displaying necessary information. The Sonata 2024 also has a head-up display and SuperVision gauge cluster as premium features.
The center fascia houses an 8-inch floating infotainment screen that supports AM/FM radio, MP3, USB, and AUX connectivity. The car has a rearview camera for improved visibility. Automatic dual-zone climate control, auto defogger, and rear AC ventilation are standard.
The Sonata 2024 has a standard anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist, as well as Auto Brake Hold and Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) for safer parking. The car also has a remote automatic tailgate.
Sonata Safety
The 2024 Sonata provides central door locking, speed-sensing door lock, and child safety lock features. Keyless entry using a smart key, immobilizer, and burglar alarm are also available. The 2.0 model comes with two airbags, while the 2.5 model is equipped with four. The car has ISOFIX anchors for child seats, and a variety of safety technologies, including Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Traction Control System (TCS), Rear Occupant Alert, front and rear parking sensors, auto cruise control, and seat belt warning.
Hyundai Sonata Engine
The Hyundai Sonata is available in two engine options: the 2.0 and the 2.5. The 2.0 model features a 2000cc naturally aspirated engine that delivers 152 horsepower at 6200 RPM and 192 Nm of torque at 4500 RPM. The 2.5 model is equipped with a 2500cc naturally aspirated engine that produces 180 horsepower at 6000 RPM and 232 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. Both models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission and are 2WD.
Sonata Ride & Handling
The 2WD Hyundai Sonata 2024 prioritizes comfort over sportiness. The car may have a sporty exterior appearance, but it's designed for a smooth, comfortable ride rather than speed. Its handling is stable and its suspension effectively dampens road bumps, resulting in good overall ride quality.
Sonata Maintenance
The Hyundai Sonata 2024 is easy to maintain, however, as it's a newly launched model, its auto parts may not yet be widely available.
Sonata Competitors
The Sonata is the first locally assembled D-segment sedan in Pakistan, so it has no direct competition. However, it may impact the sales of two imported D-segment sedans, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
The Honda Accord shares many features with the Sonata and is larger in size, but it is also a luxury car that is much more expensive, making the Sonata a more attractive option.
The Toyota Camry, also a luxury car, costs twice as much as the Sonata.
