Punjab Enforces Heavy Fines for 8 Major Traffic Violations

The Punjab government has revised the Motor Vehicle Act 2025, introducing strict penalties to curb reckless driving and improve road safety across the province. These new fines target eight major traffic violations and aim to promote discipline among motorists.

1. Smoke-Emitting and Polluting Vehicles
Vehicles producing smoke or contributing to air pollution will now face heavy penalties. Motorcyclists will pay Rs. 5,000, while cars and jeeps face Rs. 10,000 fines. For public service vehicles (PSVs), the fine rises to Rs. 15,000, and heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) will be charged Rs. 20,000. This move supports Punjab’s environmental protection drive.

2. Illegal Parking in No-Parking Zones
Motorists found parking in restricted or no-parking areas will be fined Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for PSVs, and Rs. 20,000 for HTVs. The government hopes to reduce urban congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow.

3. Throwing Garbage from Vehicles
Anyone caught throwing litter or garbage from moving vehicles will be penalized Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000, depending on the vehicle type. This fine promotes cleaner roads and discourages environmental negligence.

4. Driving Without a Seatbelt
Drivers failing to wear seatbelts will face fines of Rs. 10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for PSVs, and Rs. 20,000 for HTVs. Authorities stress that seatbelts save lives and reduce accident-related injuries.

5. Underage Driving
The strictest penalties target underage drivers, who will face up to Rs. 100,000 fines for heavy vehicles. Motorcycles attract Rs. 25,000, cars and jeeps Rs. 30,000, and PSVs Rs. 50,000. Punjab officials emphasize that only licensed, mature drivers are allowed on the road.

6. Using Mobile Phones While Driving
Using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle now carries serious fines — Rs. 5,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for PSVs, and Rs. 20,000 for HTVs. The government hopes to reduce distraction-related road accidents.

7. Overloading Motorcycles with Passengers
Motorcycles carrying more than two passengers will now be fined Rs. 5,000. Overloading affects balance, increases accident risks, and endangers lives, especially in busy city areas.

8. Parking on Footpaths or Blocking Roads
Blocking roads or parking on pedestrian footpaths will lead to fines ranging from Rs. 2,000 for bikes to Rs. 20,000 for heavy vehicles. The measure is designed to maintain smooth traffic flow and protect pedestrian rights.

Purpose Behind the New Penalties
According to Punjab authorities, these increased fines are meant to encourage responsible driving, improve road discipline, and reduce accident rates throughout the province. The new law also aligns with the government’s broader road safety and pollution-control initiatives.
