To all members,
I am aware of the fact that there are probably hundreds of threads on this very engine but they are all scattered and finding information is difficult.
I'd like information, preferably from people who have had experience with these engines and have installed them in cars.
a) What are the fundamental differences between the later and earlier versions of the engine, the one with the silver valve cover and the one with the grey/black one, in understand that the later versions cam equipped with variable valve timing (vvti)? Also are they available in single turbo setups as per stock specifications?
b) What is the realistic output of the engines and do they run on regular gas or is high octane a must to prevent detonation?
c) Contact details of known dealers and sellers would be highly appreciated.
d) How reliable are the engines when purchased from such dealers?
e) What are the specifications of the automatic transmissions that come with the 1JZ-GTE?
f) Are the correct crosses, yokes and tail members needed to connect the automatic transmission to the drive train of a Crown available?
g) Appropriate prices of engines complete with turbo, intake, air-conditioning, ALL sensors, auto transmission etc?
I am seriously considering installing a 1JZ-GTE in my 1991 Toyota Crown Royal Saloon. Its original 7M-GE needs to be replaced.
Also if anyone has any information on the availability of a 7M-GE or 7M-GTE please do let me know.
Regards

Though I haven't read much into the JZ engines, I'd throw in whatever little I know about them,
A) There are a few differences in the earlier and later 1JZ engines, The very obvious one you mention is the addition of VVTi in the later ones, Other than that another major difference is that the earlier generation 1JZ's were Twin Turbo'ed from the factory while the later ones come with a less complicated and easy to work with single turbo setup,
Not sure about the block layout but the head design was obviously changed in both gens, The VVTi ones apparently cured some faulty valve design problem that was present in the first gens that caused the turbos to wear out prematurely or something, (You should wait for some one with hand on experience to enlighten you on this problem or probably do some googling around)
Apart from that the HP on both gens remained the same around 280 but the torque was increased in the later gens by a bit.
B) They come rated with around 280 HP from the factory and something above or around 350 NM of torque as far as I remember,
They will run on normal petrol with some timing adjustments but to get the desired performance out of them and for smooth running you should at least run a good ratio mixture of high octane and normal gas, (I suppose this would be a trial and error thing)
C) Your location is listed as Karachi, So you'll probably be better off getting in touch with the car geeks there to guide you to a good shop, There are lots of them on here that could guide you the right way,
I believe Sher Shah is the place in the Karachi? Go there in your free time and window shop for a while you'll get an idea of what you want and are looking for.
D) Normally a dealer who sells you the engine would give you some sort of running warranty, i-e, The engine will start right, The wiring and other stuff that he provided should work right, The engine itself should be in good nick and don't smoke or burn too much oil,
If any of those things or other provided "warrantied" things go wrong he should replace them for you including the whole engine itself,
(I believe this is the case in every city but ask around just to be sure)
E) I think most of the engines available here come with a 4 Speed Auto transmission and I have yet to see one here with factory manual one,
F) People with hands on experience with crowns and engine swaps should be able to help you here,
G) Well about a month ago I was actually out with a friend who was looking for the 1JZ-GTE motor for a side project and the prices we got here were between 70 to 85K with all the bolt on with the motor like the ac,PS pump etc, Auto gear box and all the wiring and ecu, A complete package to sum it up,
Do Note:That prices of both the first gens and the later ones were pretty much the same, So if you are going to do the swap I'd say go with the later ones, Because of the single turbo less complicated setup and less problems with the new head and most importantly a newer motor with lesser miles and less abuse,
Also seeing that you would be swapping this into a crown a great platform to begin with, I'd suggest you look around for other options too,
Like if you really don't want a high powered turbo setup and want something with decent pull and less problems then do consider the 1UZ-FE or the 1JZ-GE or even the 2JZ-GE if you manage to find one, They have less stuff bolted to them and hopefully they'll have much less to go wrong and be more reliable and easy to live with on day to day basis.
I am sure you've done your research but just attaching the pictures for the info and for reference
A. One of the biggest differences between the older 1JZ vs the newers 1JZ is the VVTI that is available in most cars. I have one of these engines in my MKIII Supra and most of the Supra owners dont like messing with the VVTI aspect of it as its just a pain in the ***. The single 1JZ's are out of 98+ cars so it would stand to reason that they are newer and possibly with lower mileage.
B. You can boost these engines on regular gas to maybe around 11-12 PSI but I'd recommend putting higher octane in for any higher boost. FYI, there's no *NUMBER* for the correct boost level, it all depends on your individual car and setup, the best way to setup your boost level is by a wideband O2 sensor, anything else is a gamble.
C. Shershah in south part of Karachi has a ton of these engines lying everywhere, just go shop around.
D. No one here can necessarily REALLY guarantee these engines, not even the dealers, as these are really scrap parts being sold to them, its a trial and error, if anyone says otherwise, they're lying.
E. The HP level will vary that your 3040LE (Toyota Auto trans) will hold but it will be in the neighborhood of about 350-500hp~ provided you purchased a GOOD aftermarket trans oil cooler, my suggestion is that you get your hands on a 2JZ-GTE Auto trans, it holds more power as an auto, I've personally held one 550hp on my MKIV Supra but as you can imagine, you cant rag on it continuously as heat kills auto transmissions.
f. I found it cheaper to just get a single piece drive shaft fabbed instead of looking for all the little pieces but the stock parts will interchange with your car. Keep in mind the original two piece drive shaft is heavy and contains the center bearing that does go out quite often especially with age.
G. That I never inquired about as I was on the market for something else in Shershah, I'd go just window shop to get the exact prices as it IS in your city just a drive away.
H. Back in the day I had a 89 Cressida which is comparable to your Saloon with the same 7MGE (which by the way is the worst engine along with the 7MGTE that Toyota has ever produced) and I personally wouldn't do this swap if you're looking to making your car into a *fast* car as its a heavy *** car, look into an older Celica maybe.
I. As stated above, I wouldn't waste time and money on the 7M platform, you'll continously be getting bad head gaskets and rod knocks.
