3 cylinders or 4

I need to know dose a car consume less fuel if it has 3 cylinders rather then 4, I know it sounds like a stupid question but it is not making sense to me and also dose the power go down with 3 cylinders. I mean in a vitz, some have 3 cylinders and some have 4, but all have a 1000cc engine. So dose the 3 cylinder one consume less fuel and if so dose it reduce the performance.

According to my info.
3 Cylinders means.BAD.
4 Cylinders means.GOOD.
Vitz 1999 to 2004 models are 4-cylinder cars and the newer shaped model 2005 and onwards are 3-cylinder cars.
