The earlier silvertop was fitted to the AE101 Corolla, and the latter blacktop to the AE111. Both engines use one throttle body and five valves per cylinder.

AE101/Silvertop 1
Hp 165@7800
Torque 120@5600
D-jetronic based ECU (flapper type AFM)
10.5:1 compression
VVT

AE111/blacktop
170hp@7800

L-jetronic based ECU (MAP sensor)
11:1 compression
Increased lift in intake camshaft
Different pistons
Revised intake ports
Revised variable valve timing, The blacktop got the VVT-i. Unlike the Silvertop, which offered either a 0 degree or a 30degree advance on the inlet valves, the blacktop offered intermittent degrees of advance.
Timing belt tensioner change
Different throttle body to head insulator.

The two have slightly different ECU pin configurations and OBD maps.
