4age20v emissions test USA
4age20v emissions test USA
i have a question if anyone has a toyota 4age 20v jdm engine in his car in USA. how is emissions test possible as this is a jdm engine and doesnt pass emissions in USA.
so how do people take care of this problem? if engine is swaped in prior to 1996 model car i was reading the emissions history the owner didnt had emsissions test cleared ever since he swaped the silvertop in his GT fx corolla. car is right now forsale in Fl.
so i read on dmv website, one can get a letter that he spend 550$ and didnt get emissions controlled so he car should be allowed to be used on road.

Nice to see you posting again, levin. (Y)
About the emission requirements; all states have their own laws. There are minimum federal requirements set forth by EPA that state must comply with if they want to get federal money for transportation infrastructure.
Let's talk about your specific question now. It doesn't matter if the engine is JDM or USDM; it's the emission control system that matters. You need to look for that.
About this letter you mentioned; it must be MA state law that offers this relief. Call DMV and ask. You probably know this by know, they do answer your questions. You may even want to stop by one of the emission testing facilities and talk to them. They probably wouldn't know specifically about a certain engine but they will tell you about any waivers available to you.
There is also another option; most state requires strict emission standards only in larger metro areas. If you can get a postal address in a small town a little ways away from the big city, you may be able to get your car registered without getting emissions tested.
