Overdrive button is conrolling your so called top gear when you are traveling on the highwayacts like an extra gear. If you switch it off during speeds above 60kmh you will notice th revs will rise and as if the car shifted to lower gear. What is it used for to keep the revs of the engine higher in every gear. It does this in every gear the car shifts to always keeping it in the power curve. On Higher speeds it allows to for better fuel consumption.

Shiftlock button is to over ride the shift locking safety mechanism that does not allow you to change the lever into drive gears unless the brake pedal is depressed. and the shift lock button over ride this mechanism.

They are both lower gears in your auto transmission are used in the same manner as you would use the Manual tranny to climb hills.
