How technical exactly?

ABS, Anti-Lock braking mechanism. Designed and implemented by Bosch in the 60s. The anti-lock brake controller is also known as the CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brake).

A typical ABS is composed of an ECU, four speed sensors (one for each wheel), and two or more hydraulic valves on the brake circuit. The electronic unit constantly monitors the rotation speed of each wheel. When it senses that one or more wheel is rotating slower than the others (a condition that will bring it to lock) it moves the valves to decrease the pressure on the braking circuit, effectively reducing the braking force on that wheel. When activated, the ABS causes the brake pedal to pulse or "pump" hence called "pumping brakes" as well. Also used in conjuntion with Traction control on vehicles an d does ithe opposite of its primary function, i.e, Upon detecting wheel spin applies brake pressure to the wheel to keep traction at maximum.

Increases braking distance and allows the driver to retain control under hard braking.

Technical enough?
