A/C's Noise

Upon switching on the compressor, the airconditioning system starts to make noise (specially in lower gears). The noise disappears on switching off the compressor.
whts this sound? whts the remedy?

Might be the compressor clutch bearing then. Remove the belt and try moving the compressor clutch by hand. If you feel any roughness or play in the movement, replace the bearing.

BTW what car are we talking about here?
