Are Cleanliness and Maintenance Standards Adequate in Pakistani Hostels?

A large number of boarders complain about poor hygiene levels—dirty washrooms, unclean rooms, pest issues, and lack of regular cleaning schedules. Maintenance problems such as broken fixtures, leaking pipes, and delayed repairs make living uncomfortable. What are the key reasons behind these issues, and how can hostel management improve cleanliness and basic maintenance quality?

In many boarding facilities, cleanliness levels are below expectations. Washrooms might be cleaned infrequently, shared kitchens can be unhygienic, and trash disposal systems are often poorly managed. Pest problems—like mosquitoes, cockroaches, and bed bugs—are also common. Maintenance issues such as broken fans, leaking taps, poor ventilation, and damaged furniture tend to take a long time to fix because many hostels lack proper maintenance staff o r a timely repair protocol. These problems generally arise from overcrowding, limited staff, and a lack of strict cleaning schedules.
