Can power surges and load-shedding damage ignition coils in sputtering systems?

Frequent power surges and unscheduled load-shedding in Pakistan are known to damage sensitive components in sputtering systems. How exactly do such conditions impact ignition coils, and what surge protection methods o r power regulation tools can be applied to protect MS-HS systems?

Yes, power surges and sudden outages during load-shedding can cause voltage spikes o r inrush currents, which overload the ignition coil and other sensitive parts like the RF generator o r magnetron power supply.

Protective measures:

Use surge protection devices SPD o r line conditioners.

Install an industrial UPS to allow for a controlled shutdown of the system during power loss.

Use isolation transformers to shield critical electronics from dirty power.

In high-risk areas, consider phase monitoring relays that disconnect power if voltage exceeds safe limits.
