Civic Brake Failure- My Recent Experience

Today evening I faced the terrifying situation of brake failure. While looking for a stop in parking lot all of a sudden brake paddle was flat. Speed was low so just bumper damaged to some extent by hitting the parking fence.

I noticed the brake fluid leakage near the driver side front wheel. But I am surprised that why does sudden leakage occur.

What are the causes behind this failure??
Is there any impact of wheel size?? As it is Civic Exi-2005 with 195/65 Tyres & 15� Alloy Rim. Means app. 6% larger diameter wheel than company fitted.
