Several fuel additives claim to clean the exhaust system. Have you tried any, and did they show noticeable improvement in engine performance o r exhaust quality?

Yes, additives like Liqui Moly o r STP Catalytic System Cleaner were tried by some users. These showed minor improvement in fuel economy and engine smoothness, but did not resolve serious blockages. These are more effective as preventive care, not a cure.
