The appropriate term is "break-in" period. Most of the newer engines come pre-run, so there's no need although its is advised that you drive as smoothly as possible to keep temperature fluctuations at a minimum for the first 500Kms. Drive whereever with as many people (within the recommended capacity). Although, for the first 500kms, avoid excessivly long highway runs and if you do have to make one, vary your speed constantly. This sets in the parts better. These precaustion are for new cars, a rebuild should be taken slightly more carefully die to craftsman ship and the total ignorance of tolerances. When you've had a rebuild, keep it under 4500rpm, avoid sudden starts OR stops. Never drive the vehicle at a constant speed, avoid short trips and a very useful hint i picked up, attach a used speaker magnet to your oil sump (the bigger the better), it keeps contaminents such as engine particles from recirculating in the oil passages and damaging moving parts. Avoid static runnings, in all my rebuilds, the only static running i've done is to get the engine to its operating temperature. During the first 20kms, drive it a bit hard (no over revving) and change the oil.
That should do you just fine.
