Function of butterfly in carby cars ?

hey fellas ,
i would like to ask our experts what is exactly the function of butterfly i own a carby cultus and cng mechanic told me i have a broken butterfly but i dont seems to have any trouble what so ever with that broken butterfly if he was telling me the truth so can some one please explain me what is the function of butterfly and what happens when that butterfly is broken or not working properly and is there any link starting the car with butterfly i would be thankful .

dear i think the main function of butterfly is to control petrole level in the carburator, but you are on cng, there is no use while ride is on CNG, but make it replace if you want to drive on petrole..!!!
