As far as I have learnt in my experience with engines, we first have a need (or application) and then comes the solution(or the engine). In other words, when you have an application, then find an engine to suit the application and not try to find the application after finding the engine

All I am trying to say is that all the options are good, just depends on what you intend to do with the car. Thats the whole reason why BMW allows these combinations so the customer can have a car suitable to their application.
