How do poorly maintained vehicles contribute to urban air pollution in Pakistan? Detail:

In major Pakistani cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, old and poorly maintained vehicles release excessive amounts of smoke and toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These emissions are a leading cause of smog, respiratory illnesses, and reduced visibility. What policies o r enforcement mechanisms could be implemented to ensure regular vehicle emission testing and reduce pollution from outdated transport fleets?

Poorly maintained vehicles are one of the major sources of air pollution in Pakistan’s urban areas. Many cars, buses, and trucks run on outdated engines that burn fuel inefficiently, releasing high levels of carbon monoxide CO, nitrogen oxides NOₓ, and particulate matter PM. Diesel vehicles, especially, emit black smoke due to incomplete combustion.

The absence of regular vehicle inspection and emission control programs worsens the problem. In cities like Lahore and Karachi, this has led to persistent smog, eye and lung irritation, and rising cases of asthma and bronchitis.

To address this issue, the government could enforce mandatory vehicle emission testing, phase out old and unfit vehicles, and promote cleaner fuels such as Euro-V standard petrol and diesel. Encouraging electric o r hybrid vehicles and improving public transport systems would also significantly reduce vehicular emissions.
