How to check desiel engines?

does anyone know how to check a desiel engine? i mean wat things should i be looking at to ensure the engine is top notch. the car is 2.0D saloon 03 corolla. the millage shows just 18000 which is impossible. so tell me ways to check guys.

There should be no back compression and no abnormal sound.To check the back compression remove the small pipe fixed at valve cover(tappet cover) and block the hole with ur finger,now start and race the engine,if u feel a slight pressure, it means engine is good.There should be no high pressure and oil splashes.
