How to clean AC evaporator (heat exchanger inside)

How to clean AC evaporator (heat exchanger inside)

The car is the indus corolla 95/96 model.

Every time i switch on the AC it feel like the air im breathing is foul.
The evaporator unit (heat exchanger) inside the car under the glove box needs cleaning. AC guy says they'll need to take it out and after that gas needs to be refilled.

So fellow indus car owners, what to do coz i dont wana get into the gas refill stuff! Help!

Is the problem just a foul odour? If the volume of the airflow is okay then you may be able to kill the odour by spraying a bleach solution into the intake. Also, try to run the blower after switching off the compressor for a few minutes to dry out the coils before shutting down. Also check the drain tube for any blockage.

If these don't work, then a thorough cleaning by opening up may be the only practical solution.
