How To Judge The Performance Of Engine Oil??

Dear Friends,

How can one judge the quality of an engine oil? eg some one uses Shell, others would use Caltex etc. In the western world they analyze the used oil for the quality etc...

Here in Pakistan we don't have the facilities but we hear people that a particular X brand engine oil is better than Y brand oil........my query is how do we make that decision based on technical grounds??

All the top brands must be good but then how can we know that oil is doing its job properly/??

Experts kindly reply keeping in mind our local conditions.

Thanks

synthetic oils are better than semi synthetic oils. always use multigrade oil SAE 15W40, SAE 20W50 etc.. these are the specs for viscocity. SAE stands for Siciety of Automotive engineers and W is for winter. actually it is the viscocity of oil at 0 celcius and 100 celcius temperature measured in centipoise. multigrade oils are thinner when cold and become thick when get hot. a prperty specially created in motor oils to reduce friction.

the other thing you need to chect is the API rating of oil, e.g. CF or SG. the prefix C stands for Compression ignition i.e. diesel engine and is the rating of that oil for use in diesel engines and S stands for Spark igniton and is the rating for oil if used in petrol/cng engine. the other letter specifies the quality of oil. the higher the second letter the better the oil. e.g. CG oil is better than CF oil. SI oil is better than SG oil.
