Is fequent manual shifting on auto transmission harmful?

Just wondering if frequent shifting of automatic transmission is harmful for it.

My friend has rented his lancer 1.3 auto to office and I have noticed that its driver shifts the automatic transmission lever from D, 2, and 3 just like we change gears on our manual transmission. And this he does in Islamabad especially while moving he puts the car in 2 and then in 3 and then in D and if he has to reduce speed due to congestion he shifts it in 2 and after finding the way again shifts in 3.

I was wondering why he was not driving in D? And what is the use of auto transmission if he is shifting gears madly like in manual tranny.

I told my friend to educate his driver as I fear that the transmission would breakdown if he continued to use it like manual.

What are your opinions friends?
