During hot months, users notice a sharp in mileage. Is the compressor poorly calibrated o r overly demanding on the small engine?

Yes. The AC compressor on the 1.5L engine has been reported to be overly aggressive:

Engine RPM dips sharply when AC engages

Fuel average can by 1–2 km/l with AC usage in peak summer
Possible causes:

Poor calibration of the compressor clutch

Lack of a smart compressor load control system seen in higher-end vehicles
Regular AC servicing every 12–18 months and using recirculation mode may reduce load.
