Overheating in EFI Cars.

Does Electronic Fuel Injection Cars have automatic shut down function to prevent overheating?/h1

I have 1.6 Gli Toyota Corolla, 1999 model. I was traveling on a motorway and suddenly my car's engine turned off. I tried to re start it but it was not starting. There was no sign of over heating felt to me inside the car. As i came out side, i saw that radiator cap was not there and water was also evaporated. I waited there for half an hour and then give ignition to car, at this time, it get started and pour water inside the radiator and again carried out my journey. No over heating was observed so far.
I want to know that is there any automatic system which turned off my engine prior to over heating due to EFI?

Indication for damaged head gasket

1. Oil drops will be seen in water in radiator
2. Oil on engine oil dip stick will be milky in color
3. During engine running, while u open the radiator cap, bubble will come from underneath
4. Overheating in high speeds

etc etc
