Polishing Piston Heads?

During a head gasket replacement job, can we remove the gunk and grime from the top of piston heads and polish them? Can we make them spotless again without taking them out of the cylinders? What potential good/ bad effects can it have?

to clean them you MUST remove them or risk contaminating the cylinder walls.

also you should get them cleaned if you feel that they have alot of carbon on them as the carbon will lead to hot spots which can cause premature failure as well as loss of power, poor consumption, incorrect detonation etc.
