Questions: Maintaining older cars

there are many questions in our minds when it comes to maintain an older car, it would be good if experts at pakwheels answer these questions in order to educate most of the old car owners:

1. Engine needs high rpms to get speed, why does this happen? what needs to be changed?

2. Longer self durations, what gets wrong when the car needs a little longer to start than the ordinary self?

3. engine runs harder, though the performance seems to be fine but the smoothness of the engine in its early life is lost, how to rectify it?

4. Engine heat start to be felt in the cabin, why is it so?

I have been mantaining old cars all my life, And tell you the truth if you will know the mechanics of a car then you will never spend 4 to 8 lacs extra on a new car and will prefer
buying an old car. I am answering all your questions below

1. Engine comprises of about 1700 to 2000 parts, They are
all required to be syncronyzed and well oiled in order to perform smoothly, People usualy make a big mistake by changing some of the parts of the engine when it starts giving smoke. By this they save some money but because some of the parts are old and some are new therefore the sound and performance is never like new, Always rebuild the whole engine and see the engine will perform like a new one provided your mechanic is good

2- Self duration is infact longer in new cars compared to old cars if the old car's self, leads, plugs, point and carburator is excelent.

3- Read the first answer

4- Because bad mechanics ruin cars, they make holes, cut wires in between instead of replacing the whole wire and do everything that they can to get money without hardwork therefore be very vigilent while you select a mechanic prefer giving your car to an old mechanic rather then a young inexperianced greedy fool because there are lots of them around

1. Engine needs high rpms to get speed, why does this happen? what needs to be changed?

Ans: Loss of Horse power and reduced torque! Engine needs more torque to lift the chassis structure. (Many factors are affecting the HP like air intake, fuel injection system; engine oil if all sub components is ok then may need to overhaul piston set.

2. Longer self durations, what gets wrong when the car needs a little longer to start than the ordinary self?

Ans: Carbon on Plugs, not enough revolutions to meet the requirement of engine by Starter motor commonly battery issue. May need to adjust fuel system as well as air intake "Tuning"

3. 3. Engine runs harder, though the performance seems to be fine but the smoothness of the engine in its early life is lost, how to rectify it?

Ans: The Gap between pistons and engine cylinder walls increased. Less compression. the oil deteriorate more often causes roughness in drive .

4. Engine heat start to be felt in the cabin, why is it so?

Ans. one of the fabric is used to insulate the heat from engine bay is used behind the Dash board and under the carpet needs to be replaced, the Exhaust system is chocked. or may be the rubbers washers (around pipes and cables) that are used to insulate water from engine bay to cabin are damaged needs to be replaced.
