When the plane touches down at the runway, brakes alone cannot stop the heavy momentum of the plane. As a supplementary help to brakes, the engines are put in reverse thrust immediately after landing. They help in reducing the speed of the plane. Its just like putting the car in lower gear alongwith brakes to enhance the braking effect.
