Speedometer Problem Civic Auto Transmission 97

Speedometer Problem Civic Auto Transmission 97

I have been experiencing erratic behaviour with my speedometer needle since last night when it came back from mechanic after have a radiator changed and a driving side window motor change.

At times it seems to work for a short while and then degrades down to zero. When it works the speed it shows is perfect. I drove about 100Kms today and the trip meter shows about 10Kms that means it worked only 10% during different journeys.

I went back to the mechanic. they put the cars front wheel on jack and accelerated it in D4 and it even went uptill 120km/h and dropped down again (the same behaviour which i described above). Then the took out a long bar type thing with sprockets on it from the hood and said that it is fine from there as they turn the sporket with hand manually the speedometer needle goes up.

So what they concluded is that there is a fault in some sproket from gear box. The gearbox is automatic so they dont want to open it. It was working perfectly two days back and all of the sudden after they fixed two things this thing is happening.

What things can be checked for this fault? Gear box opening is kinda risky especially for auto transmission.

I am very frustrated now (Plz help)
