The lowdown on tappets adjustment.

Iv a feeler gauge to determine what good or bad adjustment the mechanic made to my car's tappets (95 xe). Clearly they all adjust in their own manner, each one cursing the previous mechanic's settings!

The only thing im confused about is where to position the cam lobes so that i can adjust the tappet?

Can someone knowledgeable explain the ins and outs of tappet adjustment?
