Low profile tyres offer alot of benefits such as better latteral grip, more feedback etc but they also have drawbacks, harsh ride, too much feedback in the steering for daily driving.

Usually a correct setup of shocks/springs/rims & tyres is almost impossible to achieve so you'll find that alot of cars with bigger rims and lower profile tyres have boneshaking rides.

Manufacturers have tried to overcome these problems with all sorts of ideas. My favorite was a rim/tyre setup whic was low profile on the outside (latteral grip & looks) and high profile on the inside (comfort).

Also a more practical setup was what porsche did in the 911 turbo (996). The rims are hollow which give more cushion.
