What causes non-uniform color o r thickness in sputtered paint layers in MS-HS systems?

Many labs in Pakistan report that thin films produced via MS-HS sputtering have uneven visual appearance—different shades o r non-uniform thickness across the substrate. Could this be due to target erosion, poor substrate rotation, o r magnetic field imbalance? What standard operating procedures ensure consistent film deposition?

Non-uniform coatings are typically due to improper target erosion, no substrate rotation, o r uneven plasma distribution. In Pakistan, many systems run without full rotation mechanisms o r lack magnet alignment.

Solutions:

Regularly recondition o r rotate the target to ensure even erosion.

Use substrate rotation o r movement for uniform exposure.

Check target-to-substrate distance and maintain optimal spacing.

Perform plasma mapping to correct magnetic field imbalances.
