What impact does poor transport system management have on vehicle emissions in Pakistan’s major cities?

Urban centers such as Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad face severe traffic congestion due to poor road design, weak traffic control, and lack of efficient public transport. These conditions cause vehicles to idle longer, burn more fuel, and release higher levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. What improvements in traffic management and public transportation can help reduce fuel consumption and vehicular emissions?

Inefficient transport systems and poor traffic management in cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad lead to constant traffic jams, long idling times, and stop-and-go driving. These factors make vehicles consume more fuel and emit higher levels of carbon monoxide CO, nitrogen oxides NOₓ, and particulate matter PM. The lack of proper public transport systems also forces more people to rely on private vehicles, worsening congestion and air quality.

Improving traffic flow through better road planning, signal synchronization, and intelligent traffic management systems can significantly reduce idle time and emissions. Promoting mass transit systems such as metro buses and electric trains and encouraging non-motorized transport cycling and walking can further decrease pollution from vehicles.
