What is Atkinson cycle engine

i was wondering that what is Atkinson cycle engine.
toyota's 1NZ-FXE is a Atkinson cycle engine.
i found somewhere about this type of engine and found that the inlet valve closing is retarded. The net result is that the engine has a greater effective expansion than compression.
The reduction in cylinder charge means reduced torque and power output, but efficiency is increased.

i could'nt make any head or tail out of it so need help from experts.

Its not an Atkins' cycle engine, it behaves more or less like one. In an Atkins engine, the way the piston is connected to the cranckshaft allows the pistonto to cycle through all four strokes in only one revolution of the main crankshaft, and allows the strokes to be different lengths (the intake and exhaust strokes being longer than the compression and power strokes) hence the resemblence. Its more of a modified Atkins cycle per se.Instead of throttling the intake air to reduce engine power at light loads, the engine holds the intake valve open to limit the mass of air that is compressed. For low power, the intake valve is held open well into what would normally be the compression stroke. Thus, the manifold pressure in the Prius is not reduced by throttling like it would be for the Otto cycle at low loads.
