What is the function of Lambda?

Although i hate to drive compressed gas vehicles and avoid all CNG cars but i am still curious to explore the world of CNG due to my restless and knowing behavior.

One thing that boggles my mind is the function of lambda i mean like how technically does it work?

I know it increases the pick but what is the right phenomenon behind it and does it replaces the whole CNG kit or does it functions over the kit?

it makes the system closed, that is the lambda gives feedback from the exhaust about hte quanity of oxygenin the exhaust hence calculates the air/fuel ratio and then the control unit decides how much fuel(gas) to put in the intake...
