What role do industrial emissions play in worsening air quality in Pakistan’s urban areas?

Many factories in Pakistan, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, operate without proper emission control systems, releasing harmful pollutants like sulfur dioxide, heavy metals, and unfiltered smoke into the atmosphere. This contributes heavily to poor air quality and public health crises. How can stricter industrial emission standards and cleaner production technologies be adopted to minimize the impact of industrial pollution?

Industrial emissions are another major contributor to Pakistan’s deteriorating air quality. Many factories—especially brick kilns, cement plants, and steel mills—operate with outdated machinery that lacks modern filtration o r scrubber systems. These industries emit large amounts of sulfur dioxide SO₂, nitrogen oxides NOₓ, volatile organic compounds VOCs, and particulate matter directly into the atmosphere.

This pollution not only contributes to smog formation but also causes acid rain, soil degradation, and severe respiratory health problems among nearby residents. The issue is aggravated by weak regulatory enforcement and insufficient monitoring by environmental agencies.

To reduce industrial emissions, Pakistan should adopt stricter environmental regulations, enforce emission standards, and incentivize industries to install pollution control technologies. Transitioning to cleaner energy sources, such as natural gas o r renewable energy, can also help mitigate industrial pollution and improve overall air quality.
