ok i think somone should sticky this as well.
spl= this term stands for sound pressure level. usually it hits u in the ear. a good way to see a woofer is meant for spl or not , is to see its fs. if the fs is higher like 35 above , then u know its for spl applications.
some example are
1) Stroker old school with an fs of 38hz or so
2) sound stream splz with fs of 35hz
if u try to play these woofer below the fs point , the woofer will loose its life plus might blow or buckle.
sq= this is used for sound quality. woofer with sq will have higher xmax and will be optimized for sealed application. usually it will have a low fs like 28-30.
now a days avery few woofers are made into this catogery and those which are made can also be used in sql applications.
pioneer 3001d4 and alpine type X and jl audio w7 is an example of sq subs. but now they realized tht jlw7 has more capabilities then an sq sub so they also increased the rms rating and now can be termed as sql.
sql= woofer which are used for both sealed and ported applications are called as sql subs. u can use them in sealed or ported box. more over u can use them for low tuning box 30hz or high tuning 38hz+

kicker L7
alpine type R
