Why does disconnecting the battery terminal turn off the engine in an automatic car

Recently i wanted to clean the car's battery so i disconnected the terminal while the engine was running but then the car stalled..... i thought about it and i think the battery regulates electric current in the car for the electronics to work.....
hoping to hear from you all
