Why does my motorcycle smell like petrol near the tank?

Detail: I ride a Honda 125 in Karachi and have recently noticed a strong fuel smell even when the bike is parked. A mechanic said it might be due to a cracked o r loose fuel cap. How serious is this issue, and can it cause fuel to evaporate quickly?
