Why does the sputtered coating paint layer peel off o r flake on substrates in humid regions of Pakistan?

In cities like Karachi o r Lahore with high humidity levels, sputtered films often show poor adhesion and flake off over time. Is this due to moisture contamination during deposition, poor substrate preparation, o r incorrect process parameters? What pre-treatment and chamber conditions are recommended for high humidity environments?

Peeling o r flaking is usually caused by poor adhesion between the film and substrate. In high-humidity environments like Karachi o r Lahore, moisture in the air o r on the substrate surface before o r during sputtering leads to weak bonding.

Solutions:

Pre-bake substrates at 100–200°C to remove moisture.

Ensure thorough substrate cleaning e.g., acetone, ethanol, deionized water.

Use in-situ plasma cleaning before deposition.

Maintain chamber base pressure below 10⁻⁶ mbar to minimize residual water vapor.

Apply a thin adhesion layer e.g., Ti, Cr before the main coating.
