Why is my MG HS showing transmission overheating warning in city traffic?

I’ve been driving a 2021 MG HS locally assembled in Islamabad for over a year now, and I’ve recently started getting a “Transmission Overheating” warning, especially in slow-moving traffic o r during longer drives in summer. It usually disappears after parking for a while, but its becoming frequent. Is this a known issue with the MG HS DCT transmission in Pakistan? What are the possible causes, and is it safe to keep driving like this? Any recommendations for trusted MG service centers?

This is a very common issue reported by MG HS owners in Pakistan, particularly with the 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission DCT used in these vehicles. The “Transmission Overheating” warning typically appears under these conditions:

Heavy traffic frequent stop-and-go driving

Hot weather especially in cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad

Low-speed crawling o r climbing slopes

Extended idling in gear D without moving much

Root Causes:
DCT Characteristics: Unlike traditional automatics, DCTs are more like manual transmissions inside. They use two clutches that can heat up quickly in slow traffic when they’re constantly engaging/disengaging.

Poor Heat Management: The DCT in the MG HS is known to lack sufficient cooling for Pakistan’s climate, especially in traffic jams o r hilly areas like Murree o r Abbottabad.

Software Calibration Issues: Some early models had poor transmission software tuning, which made overheating more likely. MG has released software updates in some regions to fix this.

What You Can Do:
Avoid keeping the car in Drive D when idle for long. Use Neutral N in traffic signals.

Get a software update at a certified MG service center — some owners report this helps reduce overheating frequency.

Check for any fluid leaks o r low coolant levels transmission cooling is sometimes tied to the engine cooling system.

Consider aftermarket transmission oil coolers but check warranty implications first.
