Some mechanics suggest that better mileage could be achieved with different tuning. Is the stock calibration not ideal for local conditions?

Not entirely.
The ECU maps are generally tuned for:

Emissions control

Fuel-saving under ideal conditions

However, Pakistani roads, heat, and loads demand tuning for low-end torque and fuel richness. Some local mechanics report that ECU remapping with caution o r adjusting idle and air-fuel ratios results in improved efficiency and throttle response.
