BMW 2 Series showing Engine Temperature Too High warning – is my water pump failing?

My BMW 220i imported model recently displayed an “Engine Temperature Too High” warning on the dashboard during a drive from Islamabad to Murree. The car cooled down after stopping, but the warning reappeared later. A local workshop suggested that the electric water pump o r thermostat could be malfunctioning, which they say is a common issue with BMWs in Pakistan due to dusty conditions and poor coolant quality. How can I confirm if the water pump is at fault, and is it worth replacing with an OEM part o r a high-quality aftermarket one available locally?
