Can I clean a faulty purge control valve on my Mercedes-Benz o r should I replace it?

I have a Mercedes C180 Kompressor W203, and a mechanic in Rawalpindi diagnosed a faulty purge valve causing hard starts after refueling. He suggested cleaning it instead of replacing it. Is this a good idea for Mercedes engines? Are these valves known to get stuck due to Pakistani fuel quality o r city traffic conditions? Whats the recommended solution — clean o r replace?

In some cases, cleaning a purge control valve may help temporarily, especially if its just sticking due to carbon buildup o r fuel residue. However, for long-term reliability — especially in Mercedes-Benz models — replacement is the safer and more effective solution.

Cleaning may work if:

The valve is only slightly sticky.

There’s no electrical failure o r solenoid damage.

You use proper electronic-safe cleaners and dry it completely.

But replacement is better if:

The valve fails diagnostic tests e.g. doesn’t click when activated.

There’s a consistent check engine light like P0443.

You experience repeated hard starting after refueling.

Pakistan-specific advice:

Use OEM o r high-quality aftermarket parts — low-quality valves may not last long with local fuel.

Avoid desi fixes that bypass o r disconnect the valve — this can harm fuel economy and trigger emissions faults.
