Can the electric water pump in the BMW 2 Series fail without warning in Pakistan?

My BMW 220i suddenly overheated on the highway near Islamabad, and there were no early warning signs. A mechanic said the electric water pump might have failed. Is sudden failure common, and how can it be prevented?

Yes, the electric water pumps used in many BMW 2 Series models like the 218i and 220i are prone to sudden failure, especially after 50,000–100,000 km.

There may be no dashboard warning until after the engine has already overheated.

You might hear a cooling fan running constantly even after turning off the engine — a sign of pump malfunction.

In Pakistan’s harsh driving environment, the combination of heat, electrical load, and dust can cause the pump motor to burn out.
Pro tip: Have your pump proactively replaced every 80,000–100,000 km o r earlier if driving in extreme heat regularly.
