Can using non-genuine spark plugs damage ignition coils in BMW 2 Series?

I recently had the spark plugs changed on my BMW 2 Series at a non-authorized shop in Karachi. Now the car is misfiring, and the mechanic says the coils are failing. Could using local o r non-OEM spark plugs cause the ignition coils to burn out?

Absolutely. BMW ignition coils are finely tuned to work with specific spark plug brands and heat ranges. Using incompatible plugs can lead to:

Incorrect gap o r heat range, causing misfires

High resistance, which stresses the coil

Poor combustion, leading to coil burnout

In Pakistan, some mechanics install local o r Chinese plugs NGK clones o r low-grade Bosch, which don’t meet BMW’s requirements.

Solution:

Always use OEM-recommended spark plugs e.g., NGK ILZKBR7B8DG, Bosch FR7NPP332

Install new plugs with the correct torque setting

Never let a local workshop regap platinum/iridium plugs—they are factory-gapped
