Could a faulty thermostat be the reason for my BMW 2 Series overheating in Pakistan?

My mechanic said the thermostat might be stuck closed because my BMW 220i engine overheats suddenly, especially on highways near Faisalabad. How does a thermostat failure lead to overheating?

Yes. The thermostat regulates coolant flow based on engine temperature. If it’s stuck closed, coolant cannot circulate to the radiator, causing the engine to overheat quickly. This is common in older o r high-mileage vehicles, especially when exposed to extreme heat o r inconsistent coolant maintenance.

Signs of faulty thermostat:

Sudden overheating after the engine warms up.

Temperature gauge jumping rapidly.

Heater blowing cold air despite engine heat.

Replacing the thermostat typically resolves the problem.
