How do I know if a faulty ignition coil is causing my BMW 2 Series engine to misfire?

My 2017 BMW 218i has been shaking slightly at idle and misfiring when accelerating. Theres no check engine light, but performance is poor. Could this be due to a failing ignition coil? What’s the best way to test it in Pakistan without expensive diagnostics?

Symptoms of a failing ignition coil include:

Engine misfire, especially under load o r during acceleration

Rough idling o r vibration at stop

Poor fuel economy

Occasional loss of power o r jerking

Sometimes a check engine light CEL, but not always

In Pakistan, where diagnostic tools are often generic, you can:

Use a BMW-specific OBD scanner like ISTA o r Carly to read misfire codes

Swap coils between cylinders—if the misfire follows the coil, it’s faulty

Check for burn marks o r cracks on the coil pack

Tip: Always replace coils in sets of 2 o r 4, especially in older engines, to avoid repeat failures.
