How does a stuck-open purge valve affect the performance and fuel efficiency of a BMW 2 Series?

My BMW 218i’s fuel economy has ped, and I sometimes smell petrol after parking. Could a stuck-open purge valve be causing unburned fuel vapor issues?

If the purge valve is stuck open, fuel vapor is constantly being sent to the engine—even when it’s not needed. This causes:

Too much fuel vapor during idle o r start-up, leading to rough running.

Higher fuel consumption, because the engine’s air-fuel mix is disrupted.

Possible stalling o r hard starts, especially in hot weather.

Increased emissions and poor throttle response.
Replacement is the only solution in most cases. Continuing to drive like this can damage the catalytic converter in the long term.
