How to diagnose a grinding noise from the starter motor on a Mercedes-Benz E-Class in Pakistan?
Recently, when I try to start my Mercedes E-Class, I hear a grinding noise coming from the starter motor area. The engine either cranks very slowly o r doesn’t crank at all. I suspect the starter motor gear might be misaligned o r worn out, but I’m not sure if it’s due to a faulty starter motor o r the flywheel teeth. What are the common reasons for this issue in Mercedes E-Class vehicles here, and what’s the recommended fix?

Worn o r damaged starter motor pinion gear: Over time, the teeth on the starter gear can wear down o r get damaged, causing grinding instead of smooth engagement.
Damaged flywheel teeth: If the flywheel teeth are chipped o r missing, the starter gear cannot mesh properly.
Misaligned starter motor: Loose mounting bolts o r physical damage can cause misalignment, leading to improper gear engagement.
Sticking solenoid: A solenoid that doesn’t fully push the gear forward can cause partial engagement and grinding.
In Pakistan, due to rough roads and sometimes overheating, mechanical wear is common. The best approach is to remove and inspect both the starter motor gear and flywheel. Usually, the starter motor o r the flywheel or both need repair o r replacement. Avoid forcing the starter as it can worsen the damage.
