Many petrol pumps are suspected of selling low-octane o r adulterated fuel. Could this be affecting engine performance and increasing fuel consumption?

Yes. Low-octane, diluted, o r adulterated fuel is a major problem in many areas.

Effects include:

Incomplete combustion

Engine knocking o r delayed ignition

Carbon deposits in injectors and plugs

Lower power → higher throttle input → higher fuel use

This is especially true at less reputable petrol stations, where octane may not match the engine’s optimal requirement 91+ RON.
