Is sudden transmission failure common in BMW 2 Series in Pakistan?

My BMW 218i 2017 suddenly refused to move in Drive o r Reverse while I was driving in Islamabad. There were no warning signs beforehand. Has anyone in Pakistan faced a total transmission failure like this? What were the main causes?
